As Lewis Carroll said, ‘Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.’ My other weapon is my camera.
Hristo DachevWonderfactory Artist, Sofia, BulgariaHristo Dachev ‘Chris’ (b. 1983) was born in the town of Burgas in Bulgaria, and lives in Sofia. A cinematographer, photographer and stop motion animator, he’s also the creator of Bataki Studio, a multi-media production company. |
Chris’ creative roots took shape during his childhood summer vacations, drawing and sketching on his own while watching his architect grandfather work patiently on architectural projects. As he grew, Chris loved helping his grandfather build scaled models of buildings, and learned how magical the world in scale is, and how important the small details are. Chris studied drawing in a Fine Arts primary school in Burgas, and then Classic 2D Animation in the New Bulgarian University in Sofia, and grew a passion to create characters for stop motion animation. He went on to study Cinematography, and worked as a First Assistant Camera - Focus Puller in many movie productions, documentaries, commercials, music videos and TV series, acquiring the knowledge to create miniature cinematographic stories of his own. In 2016, Chris started making photos with miniature figures out of a studio in his apartment, and began creating images that reflected his interpretation of pop culture. Together with his sister film director Maria Dacheva, he started Bataki Studio, and went on to stage 3 solo exhibitions in 2018. Their work proceeded to win a prize in the Free Speech in Civil Alarm Creative Contest, and was widely covered in the Bulgarian media. |
