Jimmy KhooWonderfactory Artist, Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaJimmy Khoo (B. 1981), works for one of Malaysia’s air carriers, and when he is not flying around the world, indulges in toy photography as an outlet for his creative expression. He started assembling and collecting Gundam when he was a child, and is now a big fan of well-designed and well-made designer toys, amongst which Bearbricks are one of his favourite brands. |
Jimmy’s work sees him travelling to different parts of the region, during which he searches the local toy stores for items that inspire him, and meets with toy photographers to share tales of adventures. Toy photography its now the only reason why Jimmy buys toys. In 2014, Jimmy stumbled upon a figure of Carl, the lead character in Pixar’s award-winning animation Up, and started on a creative journey of developing an alternative character ‘Ah Pek Carl’ - Old Man Carl - and sharing his adventures online. Ah Pek Carl has amassed quite a following, with fans from all over the world, and awakened Jimmy to the joys of sharing his creativity. Regarded as one of the most influential toy photographers in Malaysia, Jimmy has attracted the attention of mobile phone company HTC, fashion behemoth Dolce & Gabbana, as well as toy companies such as Hot Toys and Soap Studio, and even the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, to collaborate on some of the internet’s most interesting projects involving toy photography. |
